I’ve even seen this said about Lee—Lee, they say, is on the fast track for Starfleet Command. But he’s stuck in a BSG world. Yes, and no. Helo <em>thinks</em> he’s a Star Trek character. Lee <em>wants</em> to be a Star Trek character. But I’ll tell you who’s the <em>true</em> Star Trek character stuck in a BSG world—Felix Gaeta.<br/><br/>Lots of people hate Gaeta. Whatever. Go away. I love him wholeheartedly. The more I watch the show the more I love him. Let’s start with “33” just because that’s where my brain wants to go. Gaeta plotted a new jump every 33 minutes, when it was made pretty clear in the mini-series that FTL jumps were incredibly rare occurrences. That means this man was doing intense scientific mathematical calculations for five days straight. FIVE DAYS. Did he ever stop? Not that I saw. Did he ever complain? Nope. Was there ever a word of stress or abuse or anything from him but polite and swift fulfillment of his duties to the best of his ability? Nope. Math. For five days. And while he doesn’t quite get a scene like Kendra Shaw’s where he gets to SAY he hasn’t left his post since the attacks, I’m pretty damn sure that he was there the whole time.</p> <p>“Big deal. He did math. That’s his job. Geez, get a life. He’s a scumbag.” Suck it. He’s not a scumbag. We continually get glimpses of Gaeta’s never-failing optimism in humanity, especially in regard to Gaius Baltar. Now, since <em>we </em>know Gaius, I guess this must read as just blind stupidity to a lot of people. But to me, it’s Gaeta attaching himself to the person who he sees as the paragon of hope—the most brilliant human being left in all the universe—and wanting him to <em>be</em> the paragon of hope. Ok, well, Gaius isn’t a paragon of anything except insanity and self-serving cowardice (I love Gaius, don’t you dare flame me over Gaius.) But Gaeta has built up an image of him that he’s reluctant to have shattered. He hangs onto that—the simple fact that such a brilliant mind has made it through alive and can lead them all through this crisis—to keep him going. To keep him doing the math, and running the calculations, and nursing the obsolete computers through things that they were never intended to do. Sure, the Viper pilots get to be the flashy heroes. They get to go out every day and shoot things and scream and throw tantrums and risk their lives in battle. And I love the Viper pilots with all my heart. Hell, Kara and Lee are my absolute favorite characters on this show and my OTP to end all OTPs.
